The oceanographic vessel S.A. Agulhas II will be mooring in the Mauritian waters on 10th of October in the wake of a mission in the Indian Ocean, which will last until November 2022 between Reunion, Mauritius and the Seychelles. It is part of the commitment of the Princeship of Monaco and its Sovereign to the protection and sustainable management of the Ocean.
Dubbed the Monaco Explorations, this project is endorsed as part of the United Nations Decade of Ocean Sciences for Sustainable Development 2021-2030. It is guided by the four main themes of the Monaco Explorations, namely coral protection, megafauna protection, marine protected areas and new exploration techniques.
Visit of Prince Albert II
This approach aims to cater primarily for the needs of the governments of Seychelles and Mauritius, while also ensuring meaningful interactions with relevant international and regional bodies.
Research operations will be scheduled throughout the vessel’s journey and during stations around Aldabra Atoll, Saya Bank of Malha and around Saint Brandon.
This initiative, which will mark the official visit to the region by Prince Albert II of Monaco between 20th and 27th October, also aims to promote the information, knowledge and resources resulting from this operation.

Transmission of knowledge
The project will promote the interchange and transmission of knowledge through a mediation programme aimed at the general public, civil society stakeholders and decision-makers.
The Prince’s activities, in particular his interventions in various forums dealing with the protection of the Ocean, are intended to illustrate the context in which the political dimension of this mission takes place.
The S.A. Agulhas II will be arriving at the outset with a contingent of about 15 scientists and technicians. They will be joined by other teams for a total of around one hundred scientists, young researchers, film-makers, photographers, divers, artists, authors, communicators, etc.
The Explorations de Monaco serves as a platform for Prince Albert II’s commitment to the protection of the ocean.
